The Ballard Locks had been recommended to us by an Austinite who grew up in Seattle. It really is fascinating. The Locks connect the fresh water and salt water and allow boats to go back and forth. The water levels have to rise and lower depending on which way the boats are headed. We saw small boats and large boats in the queue.
Head to my Instagram to check out a time lapse of the locks!
We also enjoyed watching the fish ladder. A viewing area allows visitors to watch the spawning fish head into freshwater.
